We humans are sweet on sugar. That makes sense. All animals need sugar to live. It ' s the fuel that powers our cells. The world Health Organization recommends that around 10% your daily calories should come from sugar, which is about 35 grams for the average female and 45 grams for the average male. So it' s not surprising that we ' re born to want the sweet stuff.

Sugar stores the sun' s energy like a battery. After a meal, your body breaks down foods into their building blocks. It uses some sugars for energy right away. The rest get stored for the body to

break down later. It ' s a myth that sugar makes you extremely excited, but having a sugary snack can give you a quick burst of energy. That’s because the sugars in sweet foods are easy for your body to turn into fuel. When you eat other kinds of foods, like vegetables, it takes longer for your body to break the sugars down.

These days it' s easy to find sweet snacks. Sodas, candy, cakes and even foods that seem healthy , such as yogurt, can be packed with sugar. Food makers add sugar, because they know that to humans, sweet makes everything taste better. Americans eat about 20 teaspoons of extra sugar everyday. That' s way more than what is good for us.

Eating too much sugar can cause more than a stomach-ache. It can make people overweight,

decay the teeth and even cause diabetes. However, experts aren’t worried about naturally sweet foods- the problem is added sugar. So go ahead and enjoy a sweet apple or even a sugar-rich carrot that are also full of vitamins and other good stuff.

Even cake is great once in a while , as long as you don ' t overdo it. After all, no one wants life to be dull. And your body needs its fuel!

24.The first two paragraphs are mainly developed by

- 3 -

A.cause and effect B.making comparisons C.giving examples D.problem and solution 25.People may be tncked into eating too much sugar because . A.no one wants life to be boring

B.sugar is the fuel for the plants and animals on the Earth C.so-called healthy food can be packed with sugar D.we’re born to want the sweet stuff

26.What does the author want to stress in Para. 4? A.We' d better say no to sweet foods.

B.We’d better consume sugar from natural sources. C.Eating too much sugar is bad for our health. D.Experts are worried about added sugar.

27.What can be a suitable title for the text?

A.Sugar Is Everywhere. B.Why Does Sugar Make Us Fat? C.Why Does Sugar Taste So good? D.Sugar Brings Happiness.

As computers become all the more popular in China, Chinese people are increasingly relying on computer keyboards to input Chinese characters. But if they use the computer too much, they may end up forgetting the exact strokes(笔画)of each Chinese character when writing on paper. Experts suggest people, especially students, write by hand more.

Do you write by hand more or type more? In Beijing, students start using a computer as early as primary school. And computer dependence is more wide-spread among university students. Almost all their assignments and essays are typed on a computer.

All the students interviewed say they usually use a computer.

It's faster and easier to correct if using a computer. And that's why computers are being applied more and more often to modern education. But when people are taking stock in computers increasingly, problems appear.

“When I'm writing with a pen, I find I often can't remember how to write a character, though I feel I’m familiar with it.”

“I'm not in the mood to write when faced with a pen and paper.”

Many students don't feel this is something to worry about. Now that it's more convenient and efficient to write on a computer, why bother to handwrite?

Many educators think differently. Shi Liwei, the headmaster of a famous primary school in the capital said, “Chinese characters enjoy both practical and aesthetic (审美的) value. But those characters typed with computer keyboards only maintain their practical value. All the artistic beauty of the characters is lost. And handwriting contains the writer's emotion. Through one's handwriting, people can get to know one's thinking and personality. Beautiful writing will give people a better first impression of them.”

To encourage students to handwrite more, many primary schools in Beijing have made writing classes compulsory (必修的) and in universities, some professors are asking students to turn in their homework and essays written by hand.

28. The underlined expression “taking stock in” (Paragraph 4) probably means ______.

A. getting bored with B. getting curious about

C. becoming crazy about D. getting dependent on

29. The students interviewed prefer to write using a computer mainly because _______.

- 4 -

B. computers have become a trend and fashion in China.

C. they find it not easy to remember how to write a character

D. they can correct the mistakes they make quickly and conveniently 30. Which of the following statements is NOT TRUE of the advantages of handwriting? A. Handwriting contains the writer's emotion.

B. Chinese characters enjoy both practical and aesthetic value.

C. Handwriting can impress people well and build one’s self-confidence

D. The writer’s thinking and personality are shown in his or her handwriting, 31. Which of the following can best serve as the title of the passage? A. The Importance of Handwriting and Typing.

B. Practical and Aesthetic Value of Chinese Characters. C. Writing By Computer Will Replace Writing By Hand D. To Type or To Hand Write

A thirty-high school reunion(聚会)could bring good and bad memories. Perhaps the most unpleasant memory is that high school youth ended thirty years earlier. The best memory for me was the remarkable transition(转变)that took place during four years of high school and the major impact of positive adult influence.

I was a wrestler. It was a sport addiction that caused my transformation from a weaker to a confident athlete. My coach, Gary Listerman, played an important role as teacher, friend and mentor during those important developmental years. A good coach builds more than a strong sports team. Coach Listerman taught the important values of discipline and character to young teenagers.

My wrestling career began in junior high school and ended with a good record. It did not take long for me to realized high school freshmen are no longer “big fish” when joining a team of older, stronger and more experienced teammates. Listerman understand the value of younger players as the future of the team. It had an important effect on the older teammates as they also treated younger teammates with a similar respect. What resulted was a strong team with members supporting each other ,which is a quality of a successful team.

During a long career as a high school wrestling coach, Listerman began to see the team develop. The team appeared strong in local competitions and eventually sent wrestlers to the state team one year before my senior year. The next year was my turn along with two senior teammates. Today, I can still see the joy and pride Listerman felt each time a wrestler won the match. I can imagine his joy and pride when Listerman coached his first State Champion 29 years later.

Gary Listerman coached wrestling at Sycamore High School for 30 years. It was not only a great career building a strong sports program. It was a period when one person made a difference in the lives of thousands of athletes. Like many, I will always remember Coach Listerman as an important positive influence during my high school years.

32.What does the underlined word “mentor”in Paragraph 2 probably mean? A.Experienced and good adviser B.Strict and unfriendly master C.A partner who often stays with another D.Sportsman who has excellent skills

33.Form the passage we learn that Coach Listerman . A.Paid all his attention to building a strong sports team B.specially paid attention to the very skilled C.thought only the author would have a good future D.understood the importance of the players’ qualities 34.With Coach Listerman’s help the author . A.became the first to be sent to the state team B.won many championships in local competitions

C.was sent to the state team when he was in Senior One D.won a state championship 29 years later

35.Why will the author never forget Coach Listerman? A.He was the best teacher in Sycamore High School

- 5 -

B.He had a great effect on his healthy growth C.Thanks to him, he became a state champion D.He brought up many good sportsmen 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

Some people are so rude. Who sends an e-mail or a text message that just says \"Thank you”? Who leaves a voice mail message rather than texts you? Who asks for a fact easily found on the Internet? __36__

Maybe I'm the rude one for not appreciating life's little courtesies (礼节). But many social norms(规范)just don't make sense to people drowning in digital communication.

Take the thank-you note. Daniel Post Senning, a coauthor of Emily Post's Etiquette, asked, “At what point does showing appreciation outweigh the cost?\"

__37__ Think of how long it takes to listen to one of those messages. In texts, you don't have to declare who you are or even say hello. E-mail, too, is slower than a text. The worst are those who leave a voice mail and then send an e-mail message to tell you they left a voice mail.

This isn't the first time technology has changed our manners. __38__ Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor, suggested that people say, \"Ahoy!” Finally, hello won out, and the victory sped up the greeting's use in face-to-face communications.

In the age of the smart phone, there is no reason to ask once-acceptable questions about: the weather forecast, a business's phone number, or directions to a house, a restaurant, or an office, which can be easily found on a digital map. __39__ And when you answer, they respond with a thank-you e-mail.

How to handle these differing standards? Easy: Consider your audience. Some people, especially older ones, appreciate a thank-you message. __40__ In traditional societies, the young learn from the old. But in modem societies, the old can also learn from the young. Here's hoping that politeness never goes out of fashion but that time-wasting forms of communication do. A. Then there is voice mail.

B. Others, like me, want no reply. C. But people still ask these things.

D. Don't these people realize that they're wasting your time? E. Won't new technology bring about changes in our daily life? F. Face-to-face communication makes understanding much easier.

G. When the telephone was invented, people didn't know how to greet a caller.
