Detectives are very important because they help the police with their investigations (调查)。 When the police arrive at a crime scene, it is not often obvious (明显的、明确的) what happened and who did the crime。 It is normal for the police to search for fingerprints and other clues so that they can understand what happened and whether there is a criminal that needs to be arrested. However, they must be careful to wear gloves when they check the scene for evidence so that they do not leave their own fingerprints there. If they were not careful, it could cause problems for detectives。 The detectives might think that the police are suspects. The detective’s job is to look at the clues and to try to understand how they are connected and what story they tell.
Often, detectives are experts at seeing unusual patterns in the clues that other people might not see. By speaking to witnesses, detectives can discover new clues that will hopefully lead to the missing person or criminal。 Sometimes detectives will expect to get more information about the evidence they have. For example, an expert on blood can tell the detective how old the blood is。 If a witness says that he saw Mr。 Brown at the crime scene at the same time, the detectives know that they need to speak with Mr. Brown. Without detectives, there would be many crimes that remained unsolved and many people who would remain missing. 43。 The job of the detective is ___________________。

Early in the morning, I was taken into a truck by my owner, Mrs. Johnson. What's more, I was left in a big bag where it was black。 I felt terrible。 Why? What would she do with me? She was hardly able to live in the world after the death of her husband. A few minutes later, I heard the truck start its engine and move as fast as a plane。 I kept making sounds to show my protest (), but failed to make any difference。 I didn’t know how much time passed before she put me down in a strange place. Maybe she didn’t want me to die from the lack of air, so she opened the bag。 This let me breathe well and look around. I looked up, only to see many strange faces.
How stupid I had been! I did not realize that my owner meant to desert (遗弃) me until that moment。 I saw my owner on the truck, which was going farther and farther away。 So I quickly ran in the direction of the truck。 The days we spent together were like a movie playing in front of my eyes as I ran. I saw Mr。 Johnson, who suffered serious disease look at me with his sad eyes; I saw myself sit between them and listen to their talk; I saw him lying in his dying bed, and she was in tears … I ran as fast as I could. And the moment I saw her wave to me, my eyes became wet。 I couldn’t blame her for treating me like this for she was such an unlucky lady. She seemed angry at his leaving her alone。 She had tried many ways to forget him and to escape the pain of losing him. She burnt his pictures and clothes, and she redecorated (重新装修) the whole house. Now I was the only one to remind her of him。
But later she realized she was wrong to do this … The truck finally stopped when I was almost worn out。 She ran up to me and hugged (拥抱) me tightly。 I heard her whisper: “I know you are a present he left to me.” “So let me go through life with you as a witness to his love。 Death could not take away true love.\" I said to myself.

When people express themselves, they want at least two things: they’ve been heard and they’ve been understood。 As a good listener, some steps are useful toward good listening.
The first step is cooperating(合作). How does a person know that you’re listening and understanding? In fact, it’s through the way you look and sound while he is talking。 You may help him to fully express his thoughts and feelings。 You do this by nodding your head in agreement, making certain sounds of understanding。
When the person begins to repeat what’s been said, it’s a signal of step two: turning back. It means that you repeat back some words he is using, sending a clear signal that you’re listening carefully and that you think what he is saying is important.
Having heard what he has to say, the next step is clarifying(变得明晰)。 At this point, you start to gather information about what is being expressed. Ask some open-ended questions, which will allow you to find out what he wants to be satisfied with。
The fourth step is to summarize(概括) what you’ve heard. This allows you to make sure that both you and the person are on the same page. When you do this, two things happen。 First, if you’ve
missed something, he can fill in the details. Second, you’ve shown that you’re making an effort to understand completely。 This helps get cooperation from him.
After you have listened carefully, you will make sure that his thoughts have been fully voiced. Ask if he feels understood.
When enough sincere listening, questioning, and remembering are brought together, understanding is usually achieved and it's not so difficult for you to cooperate with him。 Topic 56 to be a good listener People hope they have been heard and 57 when they express Reason themselves. ●Nod in agreement and make some sounds of understanding while a person is speaking. ●Repeat some words that you have heard。 58 ●Ask some open—ended questions and find out his purpose/aim。 steps on ●Try to summarize what the person has said. listening ●Make sure that the person feels 59 from expressing his thoughts.
