Passage One
Questions 33 to 37 are based on the following passage.
In the United States elementary education begins at the age of six. At this stage nearly all the teachers are women, mostly married. The atmosphere is usually very friendly, and the teachers have now accepted the idea that the important thing is to make the children happy and interested. The old authoritarian (要求绝对服从的) methods of education were discredited (不被 ) rather a long time ago – so much so that many people now think that they have gone too far in the direction of trying to make children happy and interested rather than giving them actual instruction.
3
The social education of young children tries to make them accept the idea that human beings in a society need to work together for their common good. So the emphasis is on co-operation rather than competition throughout most of this process. This may seem curious, in view of the fact that American society is highly competitive; however, the need for making people sociable in this sense has come to be regarded as one of the functions of education. Most Americans do grow up with competitive ideas, and obviously quite a few as criminals, but it is not fair to say that the educational system fails. It probably does succeed in making most people sociable and ready to help one another both in material ways and through kindness and friendliness.
33. According to the passage, the U.S. elementary education is supposed to make children ________.
A) happy and co-operative B) competitive and interested C) curious and friendly D) sensible and sensitive
34. Some Americans complain about elementary schools because they think ______.
A) children are reluctant to help each other
B) schools give little actual instruction to children C) schools lay too much emphasis on co-operation D) children should grow up with competitive ideas
35. The author’s attitude towards American education can be best described as _____.
A) unfriendly B) negative C) tolerant D) favorable 36. The American educational system emphasizes _______.
A) co-operation B) competition C) material wealth D) personal benefit
37. The word “sociable” (Line 8, Paragraph 2) most probably means _______.
A) fond of talking freely
B) concerned about social welfare C) friendly with other people D) happy at school Passage Two
Questions 38 to 42 are based on the following passage.
For the most part, shopping online is as safe as shopping at your local mall. As long as you know what to look out for, there’s no reason to battle traffic or long lines when you can just as easily order what you want at home.
There are, though, some ways to make ordering online a little bit safe. Here are some tips.
Never click links in E-mails from strangers. Fraudsters (骗子) send E-mails with links to sites that look like genuine shopping sites but are actually designed to steal personal information. It’s safer to find a site through a Web search or to shop online at a familiar store.
Check the protractions offered by your credit card. Some cards offer 100 percent
4
fraud (诈骗) protection, so if you do fall victim to frauds, they will cover the cost as long as you report it within a reasonable time frame.
Besides, card issues often monitor spending activity so they can notice when something unusual happens, such as a big expenditure at a store not previously shopped at. “Visa continually monitors accounts to detect suspicious or unusual activity.” Explains Jennifer Doidge, spokeswoman for Visa.
Use different passwords. Steven Furman, marketing director of Discover’s E-business, recommends keeping two sets of passwords, one for financial transaction (交易) and one for media sites and other less secure location. “It’s another layer of protection,” he says. Of course, that also means more passwords to remember. 38. According to the passage, it is NOT a good idea to _______. A) click on links provide by strangers B) find a site through web search C) visit any familiar web sites
D) visit the site of a well-known store
39. Some credit card will cover your loss if you _______. A) offer 100% fraud protection B)check the protection C) give a good reason D)report the fraud promptly 40. By “unusual activity”, Visa spokeswoman Doidge may mean _______. A) visiting very expensive stores for the first time B) spending a great deal of money at a new shop C) falling victim to fraudster’s tricks D) monitoring accounts continually
41. The disadvantage of having two sets of passwords is that _______. A) the additional layers of protection is involved B) the passwords are difficult to get
C) it increases the burden on user’s memory
D) transactions may happen in less secure locations 42. The writer of this passage probably thinks that _______.
A) since unusual activity exists, shopping online should be avoided B) we should work to bring the fraudsters to law C) shopping online can be safe if we are cautions D) fear in e-shopping is entire groundless Passage Three
Questions 43 to 47 are based on the following passage.
The food we eat seems to have profound effects on our health. Although science has made enormous steps in making food more fit to eat, it has, at the same time, made many foods unfit to eat. Some research has shown that perhaps eighty percent of cancer is related to the diet as well, especially cancer of the colon(结肠). Different cultures are more prone(倾向于)to contract certain illnesses because of the food that is characteristic in these cultures. That food related to illness is not a new discovery. In 1945, government researchers realized that nitrates and nitrites, commonly used to preserve color in meats, and other food additives, caused cancer. Yet, these carcinogenic additives remain in our food, and it becomes more difficult all the time
5
to know which things on the packaging labels of processed food are helpful or harmful.
The additives which we eat are not all so direct. Farmers often give penicillin to beef and poultry, and because of this, penicillin has been found in the milk of treated cows. Sometimes similar drugs are administered to animals not for medicinal purposes, but for financial reasons. The farmers are simply trying to fatten the animals in order to obtain a higher price on the market. Although the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has tried repeatedly to control these procedures, the practices continue.
43. What is the main topic of the passage?
A) Food and our health B) Food and additives C) Food and cancer D) Food and culture 44. All of the following statements are true EXCEPT_______.
A) Eighty percent of cancer is caused by problems related to food.
B) Researchers have known about the potential danger of food additives for many years
C) We eat some of the food additives directly and some indirectly D) Drugs are always given to animals for medicinal purposes 45. Why do farmers give drugs to their animals?
A) To speed up the growth of animals B) To make the animals fatter
C) To make the animals’ meat fit to eat D) To make the animals’ meat rich in nutrients 46. It can be inferred from the passage that_________. A) scientist have made all the food fit to eat
B) only in recent years have people found that the food is related to one’s illness C) all kinds of cancer are related to the diet D) some additives are harmful to our health
47. The word “this” in the second sentence of paragraph 2 most probably refers to
__________. A) farmer B) penicillin
C) beef and poultry
D) the fact that farmers often give penicillin to a beef Passage Four
