This novel is written by Charlotte Bronte. And this novel is her second novel, published in 1847. It is a famous novel on the history of English literature, which is loved by people especially women at home and abroad. It shaped an independent image of women who dare to struggle and dare to fight for freedom. From this novel, we can know her story about her grow-up and emotion experiences.
Jane is a poor priest daughter. When she was young, her parents died and she became a orphan, then, she was lodged in her aunt’s home, her aunt is a selfish woman who are not willing to raise her. Finally in her husband’s deathbed, she promised to raise her. She has three children, they discriminated Jane, and she often was mistreated and scorned. Later, she was sent to a charity school, in which she learned how to survive and life on the terrible condition. In fact, the charity is a orphanage in which the president was hypocrite and the life was very hard so that jane continued to suffer from the pain physically and mentally. Due to the poor living conditions, the children in the orphanage often died from illness. Her good friend, Helen died in a big typhus. The typhus makes the orphanage a big improvement. Jane received six-year education in the new environment, and she taught for two years in this school. But Jane tired of the life there, advertising to seek a job- family teacher. Then she left this school, through applying for a job into the Thornfield whose master is Mr. Rochester. Then she became a home teacher to teach the girl who was adopted by Mr. Rochester. The girl Della was ten years old.
Rochester was her patronage and she was Jane’s student. One evening, Jane went out for a walk, meeting the master just back from abroad. This was the first time that they met. Later she found him depressed and moody, and the attitude towards her was different. The whole house was depressed and sometimes they could hear a strange laughter.
Although Jane is plain and poor, she is honest, sincere and independent, and she can express herself. Gradually Mr. Rochester was attracted by Jane, and Jane loved him. At the beginning, she cannot dare to tell him that she fell in love with him. But Mr. Rochester expressed his love to her and she also accepted him. When they prepared to be married, Jane found the fact that he has already a wife who is a madwoman locked in the room of attic. Jane cannot accept the truth and think Rochester cheated her, the she decided to leave him. Finally she refused Rochester’s request and left the place. But she was homeless and was taken in St. John Rivers who was a clergyman. St. John was about to do missionary work in India, and he thought Jane is suitable to become his wife, so he proposed to Jane, but Jane still loved Rochester and refused him. One night, Jane felt that Rochester call her name, so she went to back, only to find the beautiful manor crumbled to dust. And Rochester was injured when he rescued his wife, he became a blind person. Because of all these things, Jane decided to give up her large inheritance and stay with him. Finally they were married and had a happy life.
After reading this novel, I appreciate and like Jane. Although she has no beautiful appearance and noble family background, she has strength of personality, entrepreneurial sprit and good dream. She dare to love Rochester,
however when she found he has married, she chose to leave him without being tempted to be his lover. She still sticks to her love, when she went to back and found him blind, she chose to leave behind rather than discard him. Although the condition is very terrible, she still keeps her dignity and fight for freedom through work-hard, wisdom and independent personality. This novel teaches me a lot. As girls, we cannot rely on parents or man or others. We should have our own idea, ability, and economic statues. Before we become old, we should find a job, work hard and make much money to support ourselves even our family. If not, we may regret when we are old. Even if we are married in the future, in my opinion, we still need a job, only in this way can we family statues, even social statues. If we have no job, we may have no statues. We should make great efforts to support our family and gain statues. Anyway, we should become an independent person and resist the temptation.
