第二部分 阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

21.(6分) Last week, Vodafone started a test of the UK’s first full 5G service, available for use by businesses in Salford. It is part of its plan to trial the technology in seven UK cities. But what can we expect from the next generation of mobile technology?

One thing we will see in the preparation for the test is lots of tricks with the new tech. Earlier this year, operators paid almost £1.4 billion for the 5G wavelengths, and to compensate for that cash, they will need to catch the eye of consumers. In September, Vodafone used its bit of the range to display the UK’s first hologram (全息) call. The Manchester City captain Steph Houghton appeared as a hologram in Newbury. It isn’t all holograms, however: 5G will offer faster internet access. with Ofcom (英国通讯管理局) suggesting that video that takes a minute to download on 4G will be available in just a second.

The wider application is to support connected equipment on the “internet of things” -not just the internet-enabled fridge that can reorder your milk for you, but the network that will enable driverless cars and delivery drones (无人机) to communicate with each other.

Prof William Webb has warned that the technology could be a case of the

emperor’s new clothes. Much of the speed increase, he claims, could have been achieved by putting more money in the 4G network, rather than a new technology. Other different voices have suggested that a focus on rolling out wider rural broadband access and addressing current network coverage would be more beneficial to the UK as a whole.

Obviously, 5G will also bring a cost to consumers. It requires a handset for both 5G and 4G, and the first 5G-enabled smart phones are expected in the coming year. With the slow pace of network rollout so far, it is likely that consumers will end up upgrading to a new 5G phone well before 5G becomes widely available in the next couple of years. 1、Why does Prof William Webb say “the technology could be a case of the emperor’s new clothes”?

A.He is in favor of the application of the new technology. B.5G will bring a cost to consumers in their daily life. C.5G helps people communicate better with each other. D.He prefers more money to be spent on 4G networks.

2、The underlined word “addressing” in the fourth paragraph has the closest meaning

to .

A.making a speech to C.managing to decrease

B.trying to solve D.responding to

3、The last paragraph indicates that . A.it’ll take several years to make 5G accessible to the public in the UK B.5G service shows huge development potential and a broad market C.customers are eager to use 5G smart phones instead of 4G ones D.it’s probable that 5G network rollout is speeding up in Britain 4、What do we know about the text?

A.Vodafone is successful in spreading the 5G service. B.Steph Houghton appeared as a hologram by 4G . C.The application of 5G will make life much easier. D.5G phones are available in rural areas of the UK. 22.(8分)Surfing: Famous Beaches, Famous Waves

North Shore, Oahu, Hawaii: Famous for being the birthplace of surfing

Wide, sandy beaches stretch nearly 20 miles along the Pacific Ocean. Between December and February, this surfing destination is suitable only for experienced surfers, as its big waves can reach 30 feet. In summer, the ocean can be almost completely flat, making it perfect for swimming.

Huntington Beach, California: Famous for the US Open of Surfing competition

This busy 8.5-mile-long beach attracts 8 million visitors a year for bodysurfing, boogie boarding (趴板冲浪), and board surfing at every level, beginner to expert. At night, the beach’s fire pits (深坑) draw families as much as the waves do during the day. The best time for surfers is winter, when the swells can hit 15 feet.

Jeffreys Bay, South Africa: Famous for being the setting of the classic movie The Endless Summer

This area of the ocean may contain the most consistent waves on the planet, with some up to 10 feet. The best waves are between late May and late August. The beach sometimes closes because of sharks, but at other times, surfers are lucky enough to surf alongside dolphins.

Tamarindo, Costa Rica: Famous for being featured in the movie The Endless Summer Ⅱ

This beach has waves up to 12 feet high, which are good for long-boarders or

short-boarders, beginners or experts, with the best waves from April to July.

Bodysurfing is not recommended because of offshore rocks. The laid-back atmosphere and nearly perfect year-round weather make it feel like the California beaches of the 1950s.

23.(8分)My friend Smita starts worrying about every little thing on earth. Say if her home Wi-Fi stops working, or say if the heater switch goes wrong, she would call me up anxiously, as if the whole world has fallen apart. Really, there’s nothing worse than not being able to enjoy life because something is stuck in your head that won’t go away.

So what worry actually is all about? The mind likes to anchor itself to the known. Worry is a symptom of the deep-rooted fear you experience when you have to walk into the unknown. You prefer things to be predictable. You fear that any unexpected turn in events would throw your careful planning into chaos. The more energy you give to your fears, the more anxious you become.

In reality, all forms of worry represent an underlying lack of trust. You are unable to trust in the goodness of life. Even though things could turn out in a number of ways, you have a tendency to believe that things are going to turn out negative rather than positive.

Negativity is only hurting you — no one else. It just drains you emotionally and distracts you from the most important things of life. It is sucking away the motivation that you could otherwise apply towards something positive and productive, like feeling gratitude for what you do have in your life. Gratitude means thankfulness, counting your blessings, noticing simple pleasures, and acknowledging everything that you receive.

Worrying can be helpful when it pushes you to take action and solve a problem. But if you’re preoccupied with “what ifs” and worst-case scenarios (设想), worry becomes a problem. Constant doubts and fears can weaken your emotional energy, send your anxiety levels soaring, and interfere with your daily life. You can train your mind to stay calm and look at life from a more positive perspective.

1、Why does the writer mention Smita at the beginning of the passage? A.To introduce the topic of the passage. B.To show the harm of modern technology. C.To give us an example for us to learn from. D.To show the good relationship between them. 2、Which of the following will cause worry? A.Careful planning. B.Increasing energy. C.Things unpredictable. D.Trust of others. 3、What will happen when you arc full of negativity? A.You will be thankful. B.You will count your blessings. C.You will notice simple pleasures. D.You will be emotionally drained.

4、What is suggested when you have too much worry? A.Thinking about many “what ifs”. B.Training yourself to stay positive. C.Reducing your emotional energy.

D.Making your anxiety levels higher.

News anchors(主播) must have been reluctant to read out the following news: Xin Xiaomeng began working as the world’s first female artificial(人工的) intelligence news anchor at Xinhua News Agency on Sunday, three months after a male robot joined the profession.

Unlike previous news robots though, Xin does not read news like a cold machine; she reads it almost like a human being. The muscles on her face stretch and relax-and her reactions change-as she continues reading. That’s why many news anchors were worried: Will AI replace us in the near future?

To find the answer, we have to analyse the technologies that support Xin at her job. Three key technologies are used to support Xin. First, samples of human voices are collected and synthesized (合成). This is followed by the collection and synthesis of human muscle movement samples. And third the voices and movements are married in a way that when the Al news anchor reads, the micro -electric motors behind her face move to make her expressions seem more human.

Yet we need a thorough knowledge of deep leaning technology to make a robot imitate a person’s voice. The developer needs to collect tens of thousands of pieces of pronunciations, input them Into the machine and match them with the text or the Al to lean and read. The process for imitating facial movements is similar. The developer has to analyse the movements of the 53 muscles in the human face, make a model set from the collected data for the AI news anchor to lean, and imitate the movements of facial muscles via programs

Both the technologies used to make Xin’s performance impressive are mature. The real difficulty lies in the third -the technology to match the pronunciations with facial movements so that Xin expressions vary according to the content of the news report. In fact, Xins expressions don' t always change according to the content. As a result, her expressions look anything but human. Actually. AI is still no match for human qualities. 1、What does the underlined word \"reluctant \"in the first paragraph mean? A.Delighted.

B.Unwilling.

C.Confused.

D.Optimistic.

2、What can we infer about previous news robots? A.They read news without expressions. C.They could interview sports stars

B.They looked like a human being D.They could interact with audience.

3、What do we know about the third technology? A.This technology is very perfect so far B.This technology is quite popular now

C.This technology remains at the theoretical stage D.This technology is far from mature.

4、From the last paragraph, we can draw a conclusion that____. A.human news anchors should learn from AT anchors to save their jobs B.Al anchors perform much better than human news anchors at present C.Al news anchors won 't replace human news anchors in the near future D.Xin Xiaomeng s expressions vary so naturally that they are true to life

A young woman sits alone in a cafe sipping tea and reading a book. 25.(10分)She pauses briefly to write on a nearby notepadbefore showing her words to a (便条薄)passing cafe waiter,\"Where are the toilets please?\"This is a familiar scene in Tokyo's so-called\" silent cafes\",where customers are not allowed to speak, and only communicate by writing on notepads.

The concept rises from a desire to be alone among young Japanese,a situation brought by economic uncertainty,a shift in traditional family support structures and the growing social loneliness. The phenomenon(现象)is not limited to coffee shops but covers everything from silent discos, where participants dance alone wearing wireless headphones connected to the DJ, to products such as small desk tents designed for conversation-free privacy in the office. One Kyoto company even offers single women the opportunity to have a \"one woman wedding\"--a full bridal affair, complete with the white dress and ceremony, and the only thing missing is the groom. The trend has its own media expression--\"botchi-zokuo do things completely on their own.

One recent weekday afternoon, Chihiro Higashikokubaru, a 30-year-old nurse, traveled 90 minutes from her home to Tokyo on her day off in order to enjoy some solo time. Speaking quietly at the entrance of the cafe, Miss Higashikokubaru said, \"I heard about this place via Twitter and I like the idea of coming here. I work as a nurse and it's

always very busy. There are very few quiet places in Tokyo, and it's a big busy city. I just want to come and sit somewhere quietly on my own. I'm going to drink a cup of tea and maybe do some drawings. I like the idea of a quiet, calm atmosphere. \"

The desire to be alone is not a new concept in Japan, home to about 3.6 million\" hikikomori\"--a more extreme example of social recluses(隐士)who withdraw completely from society.

1、What is special about the \"silent cafe\"? A.It provides various tea and books. B.People are not allowed to communicate. C.It has attracted many young people. D.It offers service by writing not by speaking.

2、Which of the following explains the idea of being alone in young Japanese? A.The increasing social loneliness. B.The stable economic situation. C.The rising demand for privacy. D.The rapid development of the Internet. 3、What do we know about Higashikokubaru? A.She doesn't like to be a nurse. B.She doesn't like the life in big cities. C.She enjoys her solo time in a quiet place. D.She travelled to Tokyo on her workdays. 4、What is the best title of the passage? A.Silent Cafes

C.One Woman Wedding

B.Lonely Japanese D.Social Recluses in Japan

How are you doing? I wonder if you could sell some Chinese knots for me. I made them myself with red still threads, cloths and other materials. They look really beautiful in the shape of a diamond, about 5 inches long and 4 inches wide.

In China, these knots stand for friendship, love and good luck. People can either give them as gifts to friends or hang them in their houses. They are only 12.99 US dollars each. If anyone wants to know more about the knots, let them write to me. Also, do let me know if you need further information. Thank you! Li Hua
